According to Robert H. Shmerling, MD, Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing: “As an important step in becoming a doctor, medical students must take the Hippocratic Oath. And one of the promises within that oath is “first, do no harm” (or “primum non nocere.”)
“Right?
“Wrong.”
Not only has the medical profession ignored the Hippocratic Oath, the medical-industrial complex has brought our nation to the brink of bankruptcy as well as becoming a very dangerous profession as the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. Not only are MDs going nuts on the cost of healthcare, they are exposing patients to risky, expensive, and often unnecessary treatments.
“Doing things that are unnecessary and then sending patients big bills is financial harm,” said Susie Dade of the Washington Health Alliance, a nonprofit dedicated to making care safer and more affordable. The medical community’s pledge to “do no harm” should also cover saddling patients with medical bills they can’t pay.
On September 23, 2019, CBS News aired another exposé segment highly critical of the price gouging in spine care, Back surgery saved him from paralysis. Then the bills arrived: over $650,000. As we all know, spine surgeons have gone nuts for decades leaving a wake of disability and bankruptcy behind.
